The Haves and the Have Nots

One of the most profound and deeply disturbing things I saw that changed me when I left the soaring towers of money in New York City was the tremendous economic disparity throughout the rest of the USA. I had no idea.

When I returned home to Pittsburgh, I was shocked to find so much poverty and deep, expansive voids of opportunity. This problem was so prevalent across huge portions of Southwestern Pennsylvania I could not help but think it would all be beyond repair unless more people become as deeply aware as I did.

THE HAVES AND THE HAVE NOTS is a sculptural show of common personal survival tools and equipment of the future. The show will take a realistic assessment of the coming climate problems and their impact on society and daily life. We will then design human living solutions to those problems on a very individual level both for those that do not have the means to acquire the necessary equipment, generators, and specialty items and those who have plenty of money for such things.

At some point in the not-too-distant-future, when the human race is in survival mode because our climate has become unfriendly, there will be an obvious inequality between the ones that dominate financially and those who are getting crushed underfoot. THE HAVES AND THE HAVE NOTS will reveal this unhealthy divide and show the potential horrors of the future if change does not happen now.

Designs will first go through a process to determine the percentage of the population that might find a particular item necessary to determine a specific market for these objects. For example, there will not be a wearable Chanel or Louis Vuitton respirator if the only demographic who needs them are farmers in the fields.

But if a piece of survival gear is needed to travel by ship or by plane around the planet then certainly Chanel or Louis Vuitton might just create an option for the ruling elite. As research is completed, each project will be developed in pairs: one for the Haves and the other for the Have Nots.

The show will be in person, but will also contain VR and AR opportunities so attendees can experience what things may be like in this economic dystopian future.
