With 30 years of experience in fashion and beauty media, I’m excited to be developing fashion content, engagement and experience options for the coming fourth wave of technology: augmented reality.
Appearance and perception are some of the greatest factors in every single person’s successes or failures. There is very little in our lives that can project our identity more intensely than the clothing we wear.
The technological advances that are coming will give us greater ability to control our image. We will have better methods to measure our bodies ensuring perfect tailoring of our clothes. We will be able to virtually put on and move around in our favorite movie costumes or couture clothing and even just enhance our day to day outfits. There are exciting changes for how we dress and strut our stuff coming soon.
The list of specific things we are working on now:
Augmented reality PERFECT FIT APP: Allows us to get more precise body measurements for better tailored clothing.
Couture closet APP: Scanned three dimensional animated couture clothing that you can actually wear and move around in.
Silver Screen Wardrobe APP: Scans and animates movie costumes and wardrobe so that a fan can actually put on the clothes and move around as though they are actually wearing them.
Augmented reality enhancements to outfits APP: Similar to the facial apps where a dog nose or another enhancement attaches to and moves around with your face. Here there would be enhancements to current outfits or the technology could actually be built into clothing that is being manufactured so that the consumer can have butterflies flying around their outfit at all times, flower petals falling off a dress, flames, or whatever we can imagine.
So you want to design clothing APP: Creates an augmented reality dress form that can be made from your actual measurements. This model can help translate patterns into your specific size or keep documented logs of your own designs. This will be highly beneficial to unusual body types like drag queens or to anyone else who doesn’t fit into the traditional dress model sizes. Once you understand the architecture of clothing, this app can apply those dimensions to all of your designs.
In-store fashion shows: these will be virtual and can happen anywhere.
Big global fashion events: Events such as New York City’s Fashion Week could be projected as augmented reality fashion shows all over the world.
Below are visual references and suggestions on where the possibilities could go.
