(t)here Magazine
(t)here magazine is a location-based publication that engages artists of varied disciplines to create the content for a whole issue about a subject that usually pertains to a specific area. When I got the invitation to participate in the spring of 2019, I jumped at the opportunity. The theme for my issue? Brooklyn, NY — my home and the place I love most. Those participating drew our local assignments randomly; I got Bay Ridge.
Hmmm...it’s not exactly one of the most celebrated or trendy neighborhoods in the world famous borough. It’s certainly not the artist havens that DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bride Overpass) or Williamsburg were at the time; no classic brownstone blocks or artist lofts, but I embraced it. Bay Ridge was the setting for the 1970s movie Saturday Night Fever – I personally danced many times on that famous illuminated floor long after John Travolta did the hustle on it (though - when I twirled there it was a gay club called Spectrum.)
And of course Bay Ridge is still a great place for Italian food.
This film was created in one weekend. I wandered the neighborhood for a couple hours and then continued to shoot at home. I created the music as well as the visuals. After the video was completed, screen grabs were extracted for the printed story in the magazine. This is currently the only place to see the whole film. The still images grabbed from the film became the end product for the magazine.
Enjoy!
